Hi, I am a first time mom, I stayed vegan through my pregnancy and have been vegan since 2003. I love being vegan. And it has always been a dream of mine to be a vegan mom. My daughter is 6 months old now and I am breast feeding. She is light in weight but her dad was also a very skinny, formula fed baby and still today he is very thin. I know her structure is somewhat hereditary but I am just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on what foods I should be eating to fatten this baby girl up. I have only recently started to use my pump after she is finished eating. I use the milk to mix into her cereal, I am not getting much though so I wonder if she is emptying me or if I am just not producing enough. Should I use formula to supplement my milk? My partner is not into the idea of me offering her formula because he says she is not fussy or acting hungry after she eats, she is a content child. Also I would love feed back on foods that moms have found to increase breast milk production. Thanks so much.
There's a tea ("Mother's Milk Tea" by Traditional Medicinals) that is supposed to increase your milk production - I believe it has fenugreek in it? Couldn't hurt anyway. It's been a long time since I breastfed, so I can't be much help! My youngest (now 10) has been vegetarian since birth. She was always a skinny baby, and still is very small. I've researched and veg kids generally are thinner, which isn't necessarily a bad thing in this age of rampant childhood obesity! If she's not fussy or hungry, she probably is getting enough milk, although I would check with your pediatrician to make sure she's not LOSING weight or anything. Try to get more higher fat foods in your diet - avocados, nuts, oils. And maybe start branching out with starter food for her too? My kids LOVED mashed avocado, soy yogurts, stuff like that. Good luck!
Thank you for the reassuring reply Starflower. My daughter has being going to regular pediatrician check ups since she was born and the doctor has never showed concern about her weight. And as she approaches 7 months I am definitely excited about introducing new foods. Thanks again.
