When it comes to cocktail parties there are as many distinct types as there are participants. When deciding on what to wear you need to bear in mind several factors, the location of the party, the types of invitation you receive and the number of the total guests.

Parties run the gamut from casual to formal, all are acceptable and you want to make sure that you are dressed for the type of party accordingly you are attending. If you receive a formal invitation on velum this is a formal party. If it is an email, it is likely to be casual or dressy. Assume that if it is a charity event that it is most likely to be formal. You have plenty choice from the prom dresses 2012 UK.

Dressy
If you are invited to a dressy cocktail party you need to opt for little cocktail dress and some simple but tasteful accessories. Whereas you do not have to be too formal, this is not the time for the dress but a dress is a good choice. You can even wear dressy slacks if you accessorize correctly. But do remember, don’t go too casual and never wear jeans to a dressy party.

Casual
You receive a phone call from some good friends that they are having a cocktail party in their backyard on a Sunday. You can be quite sure that this will be a casual one, if you are doubt about don’t hesitate to ask your host or hostess. For a casual cocktail party you can feel free to wear your casual slacks or other dressy jeans. Feminine is a good look, casual jewelry in silver would be a nice touch. If you are person who like skirt more, you could go with a pencil skirt again with a feminine top.

Formal
When you are invited to a formal cocktail party, say, it is work related. This is your chance to win head turns. This is where your glitzy shiny ball gown can really make you stand out. Get out those spike heels and that chunky gold necklace, earring and bracelet and really sparkle. A formal cocktail party is the place to wear sequins and dressing to the nines. If you own any real jewels don’t be afraid to show them off. A pair of chandelier earring can give you a perfect look.

Cocktail parties are great opportunities to mix and mingle, meet new people, make social connects and frankly to promote your career. You want to make the most of the occasion and to do that you have to be dressed correctly for the different types of cocktail parties you are attending. When you are in doubt, overdress. Over dressing beats dressing down.
