I am lucky enough to have two Whole Food stores within walking distance of my house in Providence, RI, but my sister, who lives in Freeport, IL, has to drive an hour and a half to Madison, WI to get to the closest Whole Foods. It is really hard to get get vegetarian food in the midwest.

That depends on where in the midwest! That's where I live, and it's very, very easy to get vegetarian and vegan options around my city. I often visit my parents in the Chicago area, which is packed with vegetarian/vegan restaurants and health food stores like Whole Foods and trader Joe's. It really depends on where you are in the midwest!

Less than 10 miles to get to a supermarket for all the regular stuff. Specialist stuff has to be ordered online as it just isn't stocked in the regular places. There is now a WFM 30 miles away but it's small and doesn't have everything either, so online is best.

I would say that unless you live in or near a good size city, that is an accurate assumption. I also live in the midwest pretty close to the city (a suburb of a suburb) and If I don't want Kroger I have to drive a good hour to an hour and a half to get to whole foods or trader joe's... there are little health food stores here and there but they rarely have any produce and a good portion of their inventory is vitamins and supplements... and as far as restaurants... Subway! that's pretty much it...

We live in a rural area between two cities, so a 10 - 15 minute drive is necessary to get groceries. Luckily, this includes Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Safeway, Raley's/Nob Hill & SaveMart. There's a little organic vegetable stand where I can buy directly from the growers from May - Nov & I try to buy as much produce from them as possible to help support them....prices are hard to beat, too, must be because there's no middleman. Tuesday afternoons there's a GREAT farmer's market in Monterey but I can't always make it. I've used Amazon and Eden Foods to order online...but that's rare. Also, I love going into ethnic stores for a few items...avocados, lemons, limes, cilantro, beans, etc., from Mexican & shiitakes, miso, noodles, nori, etc, from Asian....prices are better.
