I have been a vegetarian for about 5 years and have been flirting for about a year as well. I barley ever consume dairy at all anymore. Since becoming a vegetarian my skin has become much much worse! I have been breaking out more then ever and my overall complexion is nowhere near as nice it was before becoming vegetarian. I eat healthy and most of the time locally so I wonder what I am missing. I hear from most people that after changing to a vegetarian or vegan diet their skin improves but mine seems to have went the other way completely. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Are you drinking enough water? Could you be dehydrated? I also find exercising helps my skin- I mean working up a good sweat. Also, could you have a sensitivity to any foods you are eating? Best wishes.

Hi Jennie,

I experienced increased skin problems as well when I first went vegan almost a year and a half ago. I've never had the best skin to begin with (mainly due to genetics), but like Sam mentioned, increasing your water intake can help. It may not cause the pesky acne to disappear right away, but it will help flush out toxins from your body. Unfortunately, I'm one of those where any sign of detox shows up on my face. I'm been buying strictly organic produce, too, and that seems to help. I have also found that when I increase my sugar intake (and not the natural sugar in fruits), it tends to flare up again. Try journaling your diet for a week and see if you notice a pattern. It's possible you have allergies or sensitivities, but everyone's different. Good luck!
