Hello all, I'm a new vegan living in the D.C. area. I got the book from the library and I love it. I'm very happy with how I feel about this, however I need some advice. I live in a house with 7 other family members and they are NOT vegan in anyway. I love them all however they tease me a large bit about my new life. Normally I just take it, but it's getting to the point that every meal starts with me and my "freakish" ways. What do you respond to people that question you?
I can imagine exactly how you feel! Before I moved into my own place, my family wasn't too supportive of my vegan lifestyle. Even now, they tease me about being a crazy "health nut." I just laugh it off and take it as a compliment; I'm doing everything I know how to stay healthy! I don't try to convince other people to follow a vegan diet, and when they ask why I do it, I kindly explain that I feel better when I avoid certain things like dairy. People are usually just curious, and usually I (nicely) advise them to do their own research. They are more likely to be open minded if it's their own decision to find out more about it!
I haven't been able to eat meat for about 5 yrs now because my stomach won't digest it which causes a whole host of other problems. 11 months ago i watched a movie called 'earthlings' because i heard alot of celebreties went vegan after watching it and i was having alot of trouble refraining from meat. So i tell people about the movie and tell them i ust can't in good concious eat dairy anymore. I actually have the oposite prob. From time to time i'll eat desert at a restaurant that most likely isn't vegan and the people i'm with feel like they have to inform me that i can't eat that because i'm vegan. It really makes me resent certain people. Who are u tell me what i can eat. While your sitting there eating veal. Ya know
