How did you decide who to include at your birth? Were there any preparations you did in advance that made the experience more special?

Answer in a comment for a chance to be featured in Alicia's new book The Kind Mama!

My plan was to only have my husband and myself in the room during the actual delivery. Mothers, fathers, and any other family was to wait outside, I had a birth plan printed out. By the time I got to my last 3cm, I didn't care. I was ready to see my baby and in pain (proud to say I went nautrally!) and decided to let both my mother and mother-in-law stay in the room. I will be doing the same for our baby due in May :-) It was very special!

I was present at the birth of my little sister 18 years ago and it was a beautiful experience I never forgot. I actually cut her umbilical cord! I highly recommend involving your other children in the birth if possible, it really creates a very special bond and gives the previous child also a sense of caring responsibility for their new sibling.

My husband & I decided to keep it simple: just us & our midwives. But my mom & our 19 month old son played downstairs while I had our baby upstairs in our home. As soon as she arrived, I asked that they come in so they were both there within a minute or so and we all got to find out she was a girl together. My favorite part was seeing my little boy take in the whole scene with his wide eyes and say, in total amazement (and maybe a little confusion!), "Baby!". I am so glad we were all together to share this moment.
