How do you talk to your kids about being vegan?

My son is only 9 months, but I think he will learn largely by watching me and asking questions.
I will tell him that mommy's milk feeds him; mommy doesn't give her milk to Minnie (our dog), just like we don't consume milk etc from other animals. Then I'll tell him that we wouldn't cook & eat Minnie because we love her and don't want to cause her pain, so why would we do that to other animals? Also, I plan on taking him to volunteer at the humane society. Hopefully teaching him to empathize, modeling the lifestyle, and making analogies will do the job.
