When to Approach Someone You Don't Know

Hi Kind Lifers,

I was hoping to get some advice. One of my favourite webshows recently did a segment where the host went to a farm to try her hand at milking goats. It was uncomfortable enough to see the goats all lined up, stamping around as she wiped them down. She then proceeded to milk them by hand, all the while giggling about how intimate an experience this was. Finally they brought out the milking machine, and I had to turn it off.

Up until now I’ve really respected this particular creator as she has developed a lot of interesting content. However, I was deeply saddened by her choice to promote this particular activity to her ever growing, incredibly passionate audience. Granted, she has never claimed to be vegan, or even vegetarian, and I feel like she is simply unaware of the cruelties that these industries perpetrate.

Nevertheless, I wonder if any of you think it would be worthwhile to contact her and offer some kind of feedback in terms of how I felt about the episode.I definitely don’t want to seem like a troll, because I do really enjoy the work that she does and I can completely appreciate the time, effort and courage that it takes to create content and put it out there for all to see.

I’d love to hear thoughts, and thanks for your time.

This is a tough situation to be in. I understand that you don't want to come off as pushy but I think you should see it as an opportunity to open the eyes of someone who might not ever know about all the cruelty that really takes place. I think the key is to make the message as nonjudgemental as possible and emphasize the fact that you really love her show. Even if she doesn't recieve it well or never responds, YOU will feel better because you know you did the right thing! Kudos on having the bravery to even consider addressing something like this in such a public manner. It's very inspirational! Good luck in whatever you decide. I hope this helped!

Hey KindBritt,

I just wanted to let you know that I sent off a message to the creator of the show, expressing my sadness and encouraging her to consider some of the questions that really changed my thinking when I was first transitioning to a plant based lifestyle.

Thanks so much for your thoughts and encouragement! If you're interested in seeing the finished product, feel free to let me know.

Good for you! You never know, that may be the only exposure the creator ever experiences about living kindly. Let me know if you get a response back!
