Going vegan today!

Hello everybody! My name is DeeDee and I am brand new the forum. I'm in my early 30's (hard to believe sometimes) and I live in beautiful Vancouver!! I have read Alicia's book The Kind Diet (and love it!). As a vegetarian, I have been a vegan flirt for many years, although I could never give up the cheese.

Currently I feel very compelled to go vegan for many reasons... I am not healthy, I react to dairy in a negative way, I have a junk food binge eating problem which I am hoping to get control of and today I watched some videos of animal cruelty which made me weep like a baby. I have never been able to watch such videos but for some reason today I did.

So I decided to go vegan for 30 days first and see how it goes. After the 30 days I will decide if I want to stay vegan or not. I was going to start on Monday but I feel ready to do it today. I also don't know anyone vegan in real life and I know I need some support which is why I am here.

Just got back from a shopping trip to Choices and I bought some frozen vegan dinners along with the following:
-Earth Balance butter
-Soydelicious coconut yogurt
-Daiya cheese (havarti and cheddar shredded)
-Veganaise
-Toffuti sour cream

I also stopped by a vegan restaurant on my way home and got a dinner to go (mushrooms with bok choy).

Here I go! Wish me luck!

Good luck! I guess being vegetarian makes it tad easier. My story & I'm 57...in 2011 met son's now SO, she is Vegan, I had just started doing green smoothies but told her no way I'd ever be Vegan maybe Vegetarian/Flexitarian but I loved some of my meat, dairy, cheese, etc. too much. Few weeks later had to see cardiologist. He mentioned I might want to read Eat To Live. I glanced through just like I glanced through a copy of The Kind Life. He put me on high dose fish oil then had blood levels checked 3 mo later (I've had high cholesterol & triglycerides since my 20s...had been on prescription meds for it for few years but he insisted on me getting the fish oil too). Now I thought I had been doing well with smoothies & mild exercise...I had dropped weight, etc. I was in middle of MS flare but was totally surprised when got the call all numbers had doubled & now had to go on the prescription fish oil & a double dose for 3 month. That was when I said stop playing & get moving onto Vegan. I was admitted to hospital for MS few weeks after & my numbers were unbelievable. Doctors couldn't understand & actually cut the Rx fish oil in half. The other good thing that once I got dietary to send me right foods (and if you are ever hospitalized good luck!) I no longer needed cover insulin nor had the cravings usually get with steroids. I'll admit it took about 4 month to get off dairy & cheese but am managing....even had fantastic baked macaroni &"cheese" without a drop of even non-dairy cheese!!!!!! I was told recently by someone I had no idea was Vegan to take each day, day by day. Even nutrioniist is a big help with ideas. She also closely monitors blood work.
