Last night I was trying to make a casserole from my meat eating days using a commercial meat free product. I used Trader Joe's Meat-free ground, which I have read is really Yves Veggie Ground. We were able to eat it, but it was not great. Are there any substitutions that are really good?
I usually use the Boca brand veggie "crumbles" as a substitute in casseroles and things like that. Tastes fine to me, but I have been vegetarian for a really long time :) I have served them to omnivores who said they wouldn't have known it wasn't meat though, so that's a good sign!
I like the lightlife smart ground. I have purchased it at Whole Foods. I thought it was great in chili, and was actually almost a little disconcerting because I kept thinking there was meat in my bowl.
I second the Boca Crumbles and the Lightlife Smart Ground. While I use the Boca crumbles more, both are fantastic!
I use lentils a lot in place of hamburger... Other times I use garbanzo beans or kidney beans. I am not a big fan of fake meat... but Have you tried the Quorn brand of faux meat?? Even my picky husband loved the chicken products... They are really amazing but I haven't tried the hamburger product yet.
I recommend the Gardein Beefless burger!
