Guest Blog: Cruelty Free International & The Humane Cosmetics Act
It’s a shocking fact that in the United States there is no national law prohibiting the use of animals for cosmetics testing. This is especially shocking when considering that safe, effective non-animal tests are widely available and that many other countries now prohibit animal testing for cosmetics.
Modern non-animal tests use simple organisms like bacteria, or tissues and cells from humans and sophisticated computer models or chemical methods. These tests are typically cheaper and faster than the animal tests that they replace and are often better at predicting human reactions than the now antiquated animal tests that were first developed over 70 years ago.
Using animals to test cosmetics is so unnecessary and so deeply unpopular with the public that it is now banned in many countries around the world. The European Union– which includes the bastions of beauty, Italy and France – banned the importation and sale of any new cosmetics that have been tested on animals in 2013. Israel, India and New Zealand now also have bans in place and Brazil, South Korea, Vietnam and Canada are also making strides toward ending cosmetics testing on animals.
There is simply no reason that rabbits, guinea pigs and other animals need to suffer for the sake of beauty. It’s time for the United States to catch up and you can help.
In June, Cruelty Free International welcomed the introduction of the Humane Cosmetics Act HR 2858 – a bill to end cosmetics animal testing and the sale of cosmetics tested on animals in the United States.
Cruelty Free International is working with a bipartisan group of legislators to gather support for this legislation. You can help by asking your US Representative to become a co-sponsor of the Humane Cosmetics Act.
There are three easy ways to help:
1) by signing the Cruelty Free International petition
2) by taking just five minutes to write or call your Representative. Follow that link for all info on how to find your rep and suggestions on what to include in your statement. The bill is in the process of seeking co-sponsors. Therefore, it is great for Reps to hear from their constituents as soon as possible!
There is nothing more beautiful than using your voice to speak out for those who can’t.
Thank you for taking action to end animal testing!
