I’ve been meaning to share with you all how we celebrated Bear’s 7th birthday! This year Bear wanted to plan his own party and keep it pretty low key. He invited five of his good friends over to our house and started the party with a swim. Then, they adventured up a hill in the canyon behind our house for a walk and to seek out sticks for marshmallow roasting. As part of the party planning process, Bear mentioned being excited about having some kind of monsters on the mountain that he and his friends would have to fend off..! So Christopher and our friend Chip helped make this happen 🙂 Chip wore a wetsuit with a creepy mask so he looked like some kind of swamp creature and Christopher wore a mask too. Chip disguised himself as a swamp monster that was in our pool, then changed into another costume to hide off the trail and pop out when the kids were passing through. It was pretty hilarious and the kids were really into it. It was a success!
After their thrilling hike, they came back to the house and made their own pizzas. We had little bowls of various condiments set up (i.e. olives, tomato sauce, Field Roast veggie sausage, and Miyoko’s Mozzarella) that they paired with pita bread as their base. Pizza was followed by chocolate peanut butter cups from my book The Kind Diet and roasted Dandies marshmallows. Bear is obsessed with Dandies, he loves them so much! All dining ware was reusable, straight from our kitchen. We also picked some flowers from earlier in the day when we were on a walk, beautiful wild daises, to place on the table. It was Bear’s idea!

Homemade hummus with fresh veggies – one of Bear’s favorite snacks.
Post-eating we had a dance party to Bear’s favorite songs. And in lieu of gifts Bear said – all on this own – that he wanted his friends to donate money to an animal charity so ‘we can save the animals’. So that’s what we relayed to his friends!
It was a really lovely day and fun celebration. Bear’s already beginning to plan his 8th birthday… What kind of things do you do for your little one’s birthdays?
