We know about the cruelty involved in the fur trade, but not as many people talk about down. Check out these PSAs I did with PETA.
WARNING: This first video is really sad and might be hard to watch, but if you still purchase down, please watch it.
My favorite alternatives, plus, a little more about my next project:

How do you feel about Peta now since the news of them putting down all of the animals? Will you still endorse them or pull your name from their list of A-listers? I love your message and I think you are rad and such a great example of what a HEALTHY person is, not just vegan. Just curious on your thoughts. -
Thanks for the information. I did not even think about the treatment of birds who provide down. As we know none of this treatment is acceptable. I am sure people would be treated that way too if we could not stand up for ourselves, in fact we are when we can't. Its amazing how profit motivation totally skews are perspective of right and wrong. -
I couldn't even watch this...IT MAKES ME SICK !!!!!
I seriously have grown to hate part of the human race....how can anyone do this to a helpless animal...???? THIS MUST STOP NOW !!! -
Alicia, thank you for the information on your the cruelty of ducks. I had no idea !
They were treated so badly. I will spread the word, it has to stop! John polte. -
This is so hard to watch ! It makes me so sad to see them so defenseless. It needs to stop! -

Wow, this is so terrible! I agree with Paulette, people need to educate themselves. Do the research and find out what is really going on then and make your choice. I knew this industry was bad, but actually seeing it is so powerful. I am down free. Now. Forever. Done deal. Next? -
Just got done watching the video about the ducks, I have seen and read alot on how these poor animals suffer its terrible I think alot of people need to educate themselves on animal cruedly, maybe the world would be in a better place. -
Ok, as I sit here bawling my eyes out... yikes. I had already been making a conscious effort not to buy down (I'm actually allergic), but it's good to know why I'm not buying it. I didn't realise it was so violent and harsh. I knew their feathers weren't licked off by kittens... but jeez :*( -
Information is power. I too, have purchased my very last down product! I think if more people knew about this, maybe they would stop purchasing it. I am not a vegan or vegetarian but I am trying to do better and by seeing things like this, it is helping me on my way. -
I've been concentrating on what I'm eating for so long that I didn't even think of my down comforter and pillow. I'm over it, never going to buy down again. Thank you for posting this sickening video...it helps drive the reality into my brain, so it is easier to say "NO." -
I'm traumatized after watching this. Thanks so much for bringing awareness to this huge problem. I can't believe people can be so sick to do that to birds. I don't know how they live with themselves. Any suggestions for organic, down alternatives? -
Thank you very much. Another issue I have not really given much thought to. It would be helpful to provide some brands that are good for down alternatives, specifically for coats. I live in Wisconsin and down winter coats are quite popular! Thanks again -
I didn't even realize this was an issue. I knew to stay away from feather pillows, but my jackets could be stuffed with down? Luckily my grandmother made all the quilts in my house with cotton, but I will definitely be double checking my ski jackets. Thanks for the info Alicia! -
I didn't know anything about this. Thank you for posting this video. We are so far removed from the products we use and how they are produced. -
I'm so shocked and devastated to see this, I had no idea that the down industry was so awful. I definitely will not be purchasing down again, thanks for bringing my awareness to this -
I'm waiting a few days to view. Thank you, Katy, for the comforter info. Great find! Great share! and yes, thank you, Alicia, for all that you do xoxo -
I remember years ago when I was still naive and uneducated about animal abuse, I was telling my best friend how much I loved my down comforter. She looked at me in horror and said "But you're vegan, how could you use down?" I told her no birds were killed in the making of down or feather beds and she said "Do you really think they follow birds around to wait for their feathers to fall off?" That was it for me. Thank you for this Alicia. -
a no que fuerte las imagenes no quice seguir viendo por eso uso almohadas rellenas con napa o esponja no sabia tan maltrato o no -
As I was watching that video, I thought, "my goodness, how did we get here as a human race?" And videos like this will help us evolve past this nastyness and ridiculously cruel treatment of animals. I have long avoided down but did not know the extent of the cruelty involved. Thank you, Alicia for presenting the story in a way that presents a brighter, kinder, more kind-human, thus humane future for us all. -
Thanks for bringing more awareness to this subject, Alicia. I've written a few pieces about this, featuring some great alternatives, on my Cruelty Free Faves blog over the past few years. AnnMarie-- I'm in NYC right now, warm in my Vaute Couture coat! http://bit.ly/VOXeNl -

i've tried many down comforter alternatives.

thank you alicia for these videos..
and for all that you do.

That was dreadful =( those poor animals.. it sickens me. Any great/warm coats out there for New Yorkers??? -
Oh My.. Thank you for bringing this to people's attention. Anything involving the material from an animal (in interest to make a profit) - there is nothing but cruelty to that animal, period- whether exposed or not. I'm sure like me, many people never gave much thought. I'm saddened but grateful to be further informed. Thank you! -
I've also seen down in jackets. If people want down they should look for the synthetic version of it, typing "downlike jacket" in google (and reading the list of materials used, to verify).
