About The Kind Mama

When did making babies get to be so hard? Infertility is on the rise globally, affecting as many as one in six couples. But instead of considering diet and lifestyle factors, doctors pump their patients full of expensive and invasive fertility treatments. Once pregnant, women just accept that carrying a baby will be the gassy, swollen, irritable, sleepless nightmare that has become the new normal—and then assume that new motherhood will be just as challenging, from breastfeeding woes to screaming fits.

It doesn’t have to be that way. In The Kind Mama, Alicia Silverstone has created a comprehensive and practical guide empowering women to take charge of their fertility, pregnancy, and first 6 months with baby. Drawing on her own experience, as well as that of obstetricians, midwives, nutritionists, holistic health counselors, and others, Silverstone offers advice on getting one’s “baby house” in order through nutrient-rocking foods that heal and nourish, and, once pregnant, gentle ways to boost comfort, energy, and health during each trimester. She helps readers navigate everything from prenatal testing and birth plans to successful breastfeeding and creating a supportive “baby nest.” The result is an authoritative, one-stop guide that empowers women to trust their instincts during this vital milestone, while helping them embark on a healthy and more vibrant path to motherhood.

Alicia, do think I would benefit from this book having a now 8 month old? Is there much in it about parenting? Or mainly pregnancy?

To respond to Jessica’s query, hell yeah it’s helpful! I was fortunate enough to get my hands on an early copy of THE KIND MAMA last night and was up until 1am, learning, yearning and loving every page. I have 3 daughters, ages 21, 17 and 7, all raised vegan and am so damn proud of Alicia for sharing her knowledge and stories in such a beautiful, loving and accessible way. I’m already making my list of expecting families and ordering a box of books to send and keep as baby presents. Finally, a book I can highly recommend!

The bulk of an infant’s nutrition up to 1 year of age is breast milk (or formula), so most babies are mostly vegan anyway. You should contact a registered dietician if you’re unsure of what to feed your baby.

Love this! I loved being pregnant, had the most amazing birth experience and even loved the sleepless nights with my newborn. People never believe me…but it’s all about your mindset. I did not have an easy labor. I had HELLP Syndrome and was not able to have the medical intervention free experience I had hoped for – the room was dark, I had a cath and was on magnesium, was not allowed out of bed, was induced…and so on…luckily I was able to deliver vaginally and it will always be the best experience of my life. <3

Once upon a time, six years ago, birth control wreaked absolute destruction on my health and my life. Only natural, medicinal herbs and a clean diet could restore balance to my body’s ecosystem. I’m on a quest now to achieve a viable pregnancy. I’ve never found friends who actually believe in and support a holistic lifestyle. My husband does his best to support my beliefs, but he too struggles with understanding why someone would want to eat such an “extreme” diet. With this book, I feel as though I have an advocate, a friend who “gets it!” I want desperately to experience a blissful pregnancy, a truly peaceful and amazing adventure; and I want it to open some eyes too along the way. Maybe someone will say, “Hey, I never knew it could be like that!”
