A while back I went to a raw food convention in Jamaica. Raw chef Juliano Brotman was giving a lecture, and during this lecture he mentioned the importance of clean, not toxic-nail-painted hands in the kitchen, as we were using our hands for much of the preparing. He also talked about how he likes to nibble on women's hands and feet and how it's gross for them to be wearing polish. I was like "I want my fingers and toes nibbled on!". For some reason, that really stuck with me and I stopped wearing polish after that.
I used to wear nail polish religiously when I was younger, like from ten on. But it's been years since I've worn it regularly. Every once in a while I have a role where it is important for the character to wear polish. And for Time Stands Still, I wore red polish by Zoya everyday, because it made sense for my character Mandy.
Sometimes, very rarely, I just get the urge to wear it too, and I go for the most eco/healthy/friendly polish I can find. Even though I don't often go for polish, I still love a manicure. I usually go once a month, sometimes more if I'm lucky.
It's really important to not cut your cuticles! It has become common practice among manicurists to do this. It's ok if they gently push them back, but your cuticles are there for a reason. They keep dirt and other gross stuff from getting into your nails and causing infection. Cutting them also makes them grow back more quickly and uglier, forcing you to get another manicure sooner. It's just lazy nail work. It looks great that day, sure, but not for long. Have them cut your hang-nails if you want to, but leave the cuticles. I have a strong dislike for hang nails, cause I can't stop picking at them.
In New York, I like to go to Sweet Lily Natural Nail Spa in Tribeca for eco-friendly nail treatment!

Some nail salons use disposable supplies that you can take with you at the end of your mani/pedi. Just ask them to give you the supplies at the end, instead of throwing them out. And then you can bring them back each week. I do this, and I use mine for ages.
Both of these salons use Zoya vegan polishes. Zoya polishes work just as well as the toxic stuff. I avoid nail polish that contains dibutyl phthalate/DBP (a substance that was banned from most nail polishes in the US in 1996), formaldehyde (a carcinogen), and toluene (a liquid that smells like paint thinner, and can cause neurological harm if inhaled) not good for you!! These are all toxins that could affect your nervous system, and cause serious health problems. They are known to cause headaches, dizziness, infertility, liver damage, skin irritation, and kidney damage. Toxic nail polish is basically a regular acrylic paint (paint that is made with synthetic materials). It is harmful to the environment, to the consumer and to the workers that produce it. Workers are around all those toxins that go into the polish day in and day out, then we put it on our nails and it seeps into our bodies and then harmful chemicals are used to remove it and it all goes into the Earth. Do you have a favorite green, all natural nail place like Sweet Lily?
If you want to check toxicity levels of the nail products (or any product) you are currently using, you can visit the Skin Deep Cosmetic Safety Database. They've compiled a list of 53,332 products!
Here is a list that I've been compiling of non-toxic polishes and removers. I haven't tried all of these polishes so I don't really have a favorite, but I do like using Zoya, and this polish remover that my part-time roommate (while I was in NY) and supermodel, Lonneke, just introduced me to called Priti. Some Earth-friendly polish removers take a long time to get the polish off, but this one works really well! You just have to be patient and hold the organic cotton swab with the remover on there for like 10-20 seconds and then take it off. It works great!!

I just want to add that neem is a plant native to India that has been recognized for centuries for its anti-microbial, anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties. Its gentle yet strong in supporting healthy nails (and hair and lashes). Try the Dr.Hauschka Neem Nail Oil. www.earhelegant.com.

For everyone living in the Uk, I had asked some of the even organizers that I work under who visit some of the fashion shows around the world if they could tell me any nail polish companies for you guys.
She had said that one of the favorites right now is Organic Glam from The Organic Pharmacy and butter London nail lacquer. However, she can't specifiy exactly how safe they are. SHe said that Organic Glam seems to be one of the safest. Another one could be Scotch nail polish which you can get from http://www.naturisimo.com/
Hope that helps a little bit. Just check the ingredients and all that good stuff to make sure they are what you're looking for.

I love the mission of Peacekeeper, I've emailed them regarding shipping O/S- I hope it's not too costly, the nail polish range is limited but I really love that blue and their nail polish remover sounds fantastic too.

Great list, Alicia! I'd also recommend adding Acquarella, which is the safest polish on the market, according to EWG's skin deep. It's water-based and doesn't have any nasty nail polish smell. I also love that all colors, including reds, are completely vegan!

Have you ever tried Arbonne's products? Arbonne's products are formulated in Switzerland at the Arbonne Institute of Research and Development (AIRD) and made in the U.S.A. Our Swiss skin care proprietary formulas are:
- Botanically Based

- Formulated without mineral oil
- Formulated without dyes or chemical fragrances (known irritants)
They are absolutely awesome. Best I have found!

Just ordered some nail polish and tea tree oil polish remover (oo la la!) from Karma Organics! Thanks for the tip Nicky! Will let you all know how fabulous my nails look ...

Thanks for this list. Zoya and Priti seem to have great colours. I wasn't too impressed with the response on the Go Natural website. Someone asked if their nail polish is vegan and their response was that the term vegan refers to people who don't eat meat However they also don't test on animals or use animal ingredients. I emailed them to tell them that being vegan does not only refer to not eating meat and encompasses all aspects of living cruelty free including insects so if they use Carmine or Cochineal that they should revise their answer..... ALSO what about OPI? They have taken out formaldehyde, toluene etc since a few years ago. I love their colours; however it does have a strong smell. Any thoughts on their level of safety?

I must add Scotch Naturals! http://www.scotchnaturals.com/ They are water based (= super non-toxic!) and work to constantly improve their top coat so the polish lasts as long as regular! They are adding new colors all the time. My favorite is Flying Scotsman. I highly reccommend this product.

Thanks for the post! I was just wondering if anybody knows any UK companies that sell organic/ healthy nail polishes? The companies I buy my toiletries from don't sell any :(
Thanks for your help!

I really love the some of the products that are highlighted here but I am left disappointed that most are either not shipped outside USA or shipped with ridiculous shipping costs-$65.00!!! you cannot be serious.

I love Karma Organic Spa and their products. They are based out of Ridgewood, NJ (convieniently next to a pizza fusion - vegan piza! and across from a whole foods woo!) and the owner also owns an organic spa in NYC, but under a differnt name. I find that the remover is excellent and the polish stays on longer than regular polish. Lots of fun colors too. Tried the salon for the first time last year and am hooked! Definitely would recommend if anyone is in the area or to order online

Depending on how eco-friendly and safe you want to be, the products used for most of the photoshoots I've helped out on are from Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics. They're stuff is really good and have been used routinely at New York Fashion Week. They're most known for their Lip Tars which go on like a gloss and stay like lip stick and can be mixed to create any color you want. Nail polish wise, during Midwest Fashion week in Indiana, we use them and O.P.I. A lot of make up artist use OCC products for their stuff. However, they use Hazmat, which can be a problem, but so does O.P.I. so if you don't really care, then OCC has some amazing stuff - which all of it is 100% vegan.

I've been using Kaia House bio-polish since I first found it on this site around Christmas. I wash my hands over a hundred times a day (I'm in the medical field, not OCD!) so I have to keep something on my nails or they get paper thin and peel. I've had good luck with them so far. They have some cool colors and for work, some great neutrals.

What about Kaia? You posted about that just this week. I placed an order for some products and can't wait until they come in! Thanks for spreading the news!

I haven't tried these but they seem like they have nice colors! http://www.soulsticespa.com/nail-colour.html

Don't forget Nubar! www.bynubar.com
3 free and vegan. I love their colors and the polishes last longer than Zoya.

When my kids show any interest in painting their nails I figured I would buy this stuff since they are non-toxic and come in so many cool fun shades! http://www.piggypaint.com/
I too have forgone nail painting for years because of the toxins. When I do pop for a spa day and get a mani/pedi I use this place here in Austin because they are the only place I've found that uses non-toxic paint...they still use the not so great remover but since I only go about 1x/year I figure it's better than nothing...
