A beautiful time-lapse video of Yosemite National Park:
For your viewing pleasure! A great documentary can be the best reminder of why we choose to maintain a kind lifestyle. In honor of Earth Day this Sunday, here are ten must-see docs:
- Flow a film about the water crisis and the privatization of the world's water supply. I watched this and it's so important to see. A truly great documentary and I wish everyone in the world would watch it. Please help me get people to see I by passing it along.
- Ken Burns: The National Parks: America's Best Idea a look at the stunning natural beauty of America's varied landscapes and the pioneering leaders who fought to preserve it. I haven't seen this one yet, but I love Ken Burn's documentary about New York so I have no doubt that this one will be wonderful. I want to see it.
- Planet Earth I hear this BBC series is a beautifully shot must-see!
- The Last Lions This National Geographic documentary follows a pride of lions as they struggle to survive in an environment of dwindling resources. It made me cry a tad watching the promo. It looks wonderful.
- No Impact Man a New Yorker and his family attempt to live in Manhattan for a full year without leaving any impact on the environment.
- March of the Penguins a beloved documentary following the lives of penguins in Antarctica. Kid-friendly!
- Microcosmos This looks like an amazing documentary about the lives of insects, incredible photography for all you film or photography fans out there! The little part I saw had an insect whose face looked like a wise, old ape. It's amazing when we see up close how complicated and special they are.
- Dolphins: Deep Thinkers a BBC documentary examining the extraordinary intelligence of Dolphins
- The Cove an expose of the cruel practice of dolphin hunting in the waters around Japan. This is supposed to be an absolute must-see amazing one.
- An Inconvenient Truth Al Gore's documentary about global warming. I think this had a very big impact on people's openness to making changes. It seemed to open a lot of minds.

I agree with many of these...but have to add Sharkwater. Amazing, sad story and great videography of what our world is doing to sharks and the people trying to save them:

Great post. We love nature films. Amazing what you learn and get to see the beauty. It's great for my kids to watch instead of regular TV. I really want to watch the dolphin one.

Food, Inc was fascinating and motivated me to make some changes in where I spend my food $'s.

EARTHLINGS was responsible for my becoming Vegan (overnight!) so I would list that as an extremely powerful and important documentary for the sake of the earth and our future. I found FLOW very powerful, too. It's inspiring to see that more and more people are becoming aware and open and words like "sustainability" and "green" and "eco-friendly" are now commonplace. I'm looking forward to this weekend, attending a Green Festival in Hoboken, NJ and another in NYC at the Javits Center. Go Earth!

I just saw Chasing Ice at the RiverRun International Film festival in Winston-Salem, NC. It was breath takingly beautiful, but also served as a grave reminder of the consequences of global warming. Everyone needs to see this film. Go to chasingice.com for details on viewings in your area.

I really enjoyed Waste Land. It's not exactly a nature documentary, but appropriate for earth day I think. -
I was lucky in past to see a rare dvd called ASHES AND SNOW that contains some of the most amazing footage of animals, with man, some scsnes of which took hours and years to compile. Underwater ballet with whale, elephants in sea, ballets of birds and dancers, etc.
Not easy to find, expensive to purchase...some clips in past @ youtube, but best seen as full dvd, imho.

There is a worldwide screening of the new documentary One Day on Earth. Most major cities having an option of viewing the film for free with other likeminded indviduals. How awesome is that? You all should really check it out. Also, there is a kid friendly documentary called Chimpanzee. My 4 year old niece can't wait to go see it. It's a Disney production.

A definite documentary of sorts ( no words ) that warrant a look is the Trilogy of Godfrey Reggio:: KOYAANISQUATSI----Life Out Of Balance, POWAQQATSI----Life IN Transformation, and NAQOYQATSI----Life As War. These are three spetacular videos that look at our lives and planet in a visually stunning format. They were produced over a period of twenty years with such participation as Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas. The music by Philip Glass is mesmerizing in and of itself, and add in the visually remarkable content of the films......well, all I can say is just watch them, and feel for our planet and all who occupy its surface.

While I respect the earth and marvel at God's creation and want to do my best to protect it, I don't agree with your inclusion of An Inconvenient Truth by Al Gore - he was set to make billions - BILLIONS! - in the plan to market carbon credits! I try to get both sides of the story so if you watch Gore's movie you may also want to include Not Evil Just Wrong to get both sides.

Most happy to send The Kind Life a screener or two of SEROTONIN RISING. The response to our film is quite moving. West Coast premiere at the Seaside Center for Spiritual Living in Encinitas, CA on May 18th.

Thank you for this! Hope you enjoy my new movie about Compassion, Health & Happiness with the DALAI LAMA entitled: SEROTONIN RISING. It's about how doing kind acts for others will raise your serotonin levels and strengthen the immune system. http://www.SerotoninRising.com

"EARTHLINGS" - 2005 documentary narrated by Joaqin Phoenix and scored by Moby. Hardest thing you could ever watch. Exposes the cruelty and unnecessary need to kill animals for food, clothing, and science.
Changed my life in an instant.

The most beautiful, moving, and sightful film about our planet I've ever had the pleasure to see. The best part is, it's not copyrighted or trademarked for the purpose that anyone can screen this film whenever, however, and to whomever they want free of charge. Enjoy.

Dear Alicia:
I am surprised you dont have "Born to be Wild" listed here featuring the David Sheldrick elephant sanctuary. I will be ordering this on Dish this weekend. I love elephants and have heard it is very good.
