If you live in LA, you know about the hotdog stands that pop up on street corners at night, around the time shows end and bars close. They smell gross to me, and by the way, I've heard they smell way better than they taste. Haha anyway, my husband recently came up with a veg take on LA's ubiquitous street dog. Enjoy the dirt dog!

Ingredients

  • 1 onion
  • 1 vegenaise
  • 1 serving of seitan
  • 1 serving of Liquid smoke (if you don't have liquid smoke, there's no need to go out and buy it...you could probably use any BBQ sauce you have around...any sauce intended for meat-like things will do!)
  • 1 serving of Sourdough bread
  • 1 serving of pickles
  • 1 dollop of vegenaise to taste
  • 1 dollop of mustard to taste

Directions

  1. Slice up a whole onion and fry it with the seitan
  2. Lightly toast some sourdough bread
  3. Put the bread in your hand, and curl it like a hotdog bun
  4. Pile the seitan mixture on the bread and top with a pickle, some vegenaise and mustard

Not only was my dirt dog very tasty but also incredibly simple to make! Instead of the liquid smoke I used Trader Joe's South African spice blend when cooking up the seitan & onions. This is my new favorite....thanks so much for sharing this one!
