Our Summer in NYC

I had a wonderful time living in New York City for 3 months over the Spring and Summer.
The Kind Life

I had a wonderful time living in New York City for 3 months over the spring and summer. I was there for work, to preform in the play Of Good Stock. To all of you kind lifers who came out, thank you!! I had the best time doing this show. The cast and many of the crew were like family. It was especially fun when Bear came.
The Kind Life
Bear was taken under the wing of stage management and would act as stage manager. He would have a “list” of thing to do that he would check off as he went along. It was adorable! Then he asked if me could see the play (and he could not) so we showed him scenes from the play during our breaks. After sometime, he said he wanted to be in the play… as a dog and sometimes cat, running around barking or licking. We would make scenes for him about the dog or cat we just rescued, it was a sweet riot. Thank you to the other actors who kindly participated in this adorable madness!

Another great aspect of living in NYC was all the food! There are so many fun restaurants. Bear enjoyed a fair amount of vegan pizza, more often than my superhero ways would like, but it was festive and fun! We went to Two Boots on his birthday and multiple other occasions. He liked his pizza with veg cheese, sauce, and olives. I preferred the kinds that were on display, one margarita style and the other with pesto. The pesto version was pretty darn yum!
The Kind Life
We also enjoyed a lot of vegan ice cream! There were 4 great spots that we couldn’t help but visit often as they were in our neighborhood.

We spent a lot of time in the parks. Thompson Park became Bear’s main turf!

He and Christopher would volunteer weekly with Chili on Wheels where they would dish out vegan chili to those in need.

One thing that came up for Bear was the horse carriages…
At first he asked me if we could go for a ride, but when I said that we couldn’t, he asked why. I replied, because they are not free, they are enslaved. I pointed out the metal bar stuffed into their mouth and showed him with my hand in my mouth what it would be like to have it in there. I explained how the carriages were heavy, the weather was hot, and the proximity to so many cars was scary! I would be happy for him to spend time with horses at a horse sanctuary, so we will be doing that. In the mean time, we decided to go for a ride with the bike rider carriages. Bear was very moved by this explanation, as every time after he saw a horse he would comment, “Mommy, that makes me sad.” My sweet little man!
A groovy store I found was Jane’s Exchange, a great place to get used clothes for Bear.
The Kind Life
Bear went to an awesome summer camp. If you haven’t checked what Waldorf schools (Mommy and Me programs and preschool through high school) are around your area, I encourage you to! These schools are magical.

“Working” in a friend’s kitchen!
The Kind Life
Yum brownies Heather Lind, my sister in the play, made! You can now see her on AMC’s show, TURN!

Delicious dessert at Angelica Kitchen!! This place is the best. We lived only blocks away!

Have you spent time in NYC? What do you love to do there? Any go-to veggie pizzerias or other eateries, or great second-hand clothing stores?
