Last year, I wrote about my first Valentine's Day with my husband and shared some romantic gift ideas. This year, I want to update those suggestions, and share some new ideas for creating a romantic evening, eco-style!

Start In The Kitchen
If you're celebrating with your special someone, I'm a big proponent of cooking for him/her, or even cooking a special meal together. Make a dish containing his/her favorite food and maybe try throwing in one or more of these aphrodisiac ingredients! Who knows, maybe it will work?
If you plan to drink wine, go for organic. Here are some choices that I like:
- Bonterra Cabernet
- Bonterra Merlot
- Full Circle Merlot
- Georges Deboeuf Beaujolais
- Greenbridge Syrah
- Mark West 2005 Pinot Noir
- Bonterra Syrah 1999
- Our Daily Red - $8 organic, sulfite-free
- Paraducci - Sustainable Red 2005, Mendocino County
- Greenbridge - Zinfindal
- Well Read (Trader Joes)
- Vida Organica - Malbec
Set the mood with some handmade, soy-based candles. Etsy has a huge selection!
Make A Card
One of the best gifts you can give is a handmade card with a sweet message, or get your deepest feelings out on there, written by you, not Hallmark, who doesn'¢t love that? Use photos, magazine clippings, or the fronts of old cards (I always save mine) to make a unique card or collage.
You can cut out cards backings from old chipboard (cereal boxes and other food packaging) and glue pictures on them, or draw on them, if you're artsy.
If you have the time, these ideas can also work for you mommies who want to help your little one make Valentine's Day cards for their classmates. This video has some good ideas for mommies.

Organic Flowers
Local, organic flowers are the healthiest choice for you and the environment. Find out where to get them here. You can also look at these sites:
Organicbouquet.com
Californiaorganicflowers.com
Diamondorganics.com
If you're in New York, check out Gardenia Organic Flower Shop. And, if you're already planning next year's V-Day celebration, try growing your own! Learn how here.
Sweet Treats
There are so many great vegan bakeries these days! Some of my favorite vegan chocolates are:
- Vosges
- Endangered Species Chocolate
- Nicobella truffles
- Missionary Chocolate
- ChocAlive
- Lagusta's Luscious
- NibMor
- Divine Treasures
- Allison's Gourmet chocolates/fudge
- Rescue Chocolates
If you're in LA, Flore Vegan makes a good looking chocolate cake. M Cafe and Real Food Daily also have delicious treats!
Of course, you can also make your own V-Day dessert! Try the Coffee Fudge Brownies from my book (p. 181) or make the Chocolate-Dipped Shortbread Cookies (p. 187) and cut them into heart shapes before baking.

Sexy Nighties!
Lots of designers are working toward making fashion cruelty-free, and they haven't forgotten to include lingerie! Embodies makes lingerie using organic cotton. If you're looking for a sassier ensemble, Purrfect Pineapples and Urban Fox are cruelty-free options.
Flying Solo
If you're single, invite some single friends over for a potluck! tell them each to bring someone new along with their dish, who knows where the night may lead! Or, you can decide to boycott V-Day and just have a good ol' party. Even better, just curl up on the couch. I'm pretty sure my husband just dumped me for a work night, which is fine because we have Valentine's Day all the time! If you appreciate and love each other all the time and spend as much quality time together as you can, Valentine's Day doesn't have to be a huge deal. But if you are a festive one, go for it!
How do you plan to spend your Valentine's Day?

Well, the trailer has already changed my life.... so I can just imagine what the entire movie will do. Can't wait to see/hear more of his philosophy. Thanks for the recommendation, Alicia!
And what a sweet surprise for you! Your hubby is so a keeper! (Have lots of little baby boys..the world could use more men like your sweetie!)

Hi everyone - just wanted to let you know that according to barnivore.com (I reference this website often) Bonterra reds are not vegan only their whites... http://www.barnivore.com/wine/62/Bonterra-Vinyards?keyword=bonterra
I do love Our Daily Red wine though...and it's so cheap! -
My husband and I usually go out to dinner, but I think this year since it is on a Monday we will cook something great at home and spend time with the kids...they are our Valentines too! I am sure there will be a special dessert thrown into the mix :-)

Happy Valentine's Day, everyone! Alicia's chocolate shortbread cookies are fun to make and yummy! I make them a bit thinner for a crispier treat.
And speaking of chocolate and red wine, remember, not all wines are vegan. Many wineries use isinglass (fish bladder) and other unsavory ingredients in their filtering and/or processing. Check out barnivore.com for vegan wines and beer (you can add to their list after verifying with the winery). I enjoy these vegan wines: Girasole, Organic Vintners, Badger Mountain, LaRocca, and for that special occasion (like Valentine's Day) - Veuve Clicquot!

Xan Confections makes 2 lines of vegan chocolate Saintly Sins and Jewels. The Saintly Sins are sweetened with Agave Nectar and Beet Sugar and they are AMAZING. I highly recommend them.

I just wanted to share the "valentine" the New York Tiimes gave us this morning - on the Opinion page, no less.

Wow, These Websites are amazing! The California organic flowers are beautiful and I found some juices in another one. I love looking through sites like this. I my class I am studying leadership and the importance of values this week. Such as considering the value structure of the individuals and how indiviiduals look to organizations for more than a way to make money. Most people also look for spirituality, and an opportunity to use and develop their gifts. It seems that this is important to you as The Kind Life spokeswomwn and creatoras well, I am sure you know how important that is being up to date with current academic and business trends! Thanks for the Value Based and Spiritual Effort on This Site and especially this Discussion!

Horizons Restaurant in Philly does a V-Day six-course tasting menu for $60 - if you're local, see if you can't snag a reservation (we just had to cancel ours, so there may be space available). The Mister and I just did a five-course tasting menu for our anniversary and everything was absolutely amazing! Chestnut & parsnip bisque, roasted veggie salad, hearts of palm fritters, trio of mushroom dishes (including a mini shepherd's pie), and some of the yummiest desserts ever. The Mister had a chocolate tart, sticky toffee pudding, lemon cheesecake, while I had a allergen-friendly cococut creme brulee and two chocolate filled beignets! That place is Heaven.
We canceled our Horizons reservations, because I got this e-mail from Farm Sanctuary and knew that sponsoring an animal was how I wanted us to show our love this year: http://action.farmsanctuary.org/site/MessageViewer?em_id=19481.0&printer_friendly=1

Valentine's Day? What's that? Just kidding, of course, but we don't celebrate it. Just not a big deal to us to 'officially' (or something) tell each other how much we care on the same day that everyone else is. We have our own random special days. But hey, it's always nice to have an excuse to get a decadent vegan treat, right?!

my husband and i are working on the airplane on v-day and we overnight in minneapolis. incidentally, that is where our veg cat food, evolution diet, comes from and we have never been to the city. there is a vegan place called ecopolitan that is having a valentine special, we are planning on renting a car and going. just another excuse to try a new veg restaurant. i would say almost nothing makes us happier or more excited!

Oh also, silly me---THANKS for these great suggestions Alicia! I'm not sure how my beau and I will be spending our V Day but these are awesome options :)
